Creating Eye-Catching Social Media Graphics: Essential Tips for Engagement

A social media graphic is a user interface component delivered at scale on platforms you do not control. Its success depends not just on aesthetics but on technical choices that affect load time, legibility and brand consistency. We build our social graphics using the same principles we apply in our UI/UX design and digital marketing services: systemisation, technical specification and a focus on user experience.

From single graphics to a design system

One-off graphics create an inconsistent experience and are inefficient to produce. A better approach is to build a lightweight design system for your social media assets. This involves defining a limited set of design tokens for colours, fonts and spacing. You then use these tokens to create reusable components, which are simply templates for recurring post types like announcements, quotes or data points. This system ensures every graphic is recognisably yours, reinforces brand identity and allows anyone on your team to create on-brand assets quickly. The trade-off is a higher upfront investment in creating the system, which pays off in long-term efficiency and consistency.

Technical specifications for asset delivery

How a graphic is saved and exported directly impacts its performance. Different platforms have different compression algorithms and display constraints. Your export process must account for this.

Choose formats based on content. Use JPEG for photographic images where lossy compression is acceptable. Use PNG-24 for graphics requiring a transparent background. Consider WEBP for its superior compression for both photographic and graphical content, but be aware of its compatibility with older software.

Design at 2x the final display size to accommodate high-DPI screens, then export to the exact dimensions recommended by each platform. Always export using the sRGB colour profile. Using other profiles like Adobe RGB can result in washed-out or inconsistent colours when viewed in a web browser.

Designing for accessibility and legibility

Contrast ratio

Good contrast is not subjective. Text should meet a minimum WCAG AA contrast ratio of 4.5:1 against its background. This ensures legibility for users with visual impairments and for everyone else viewing on a mobile device in bright sunlight. Use a contrast checker tool during design; do not rely on judging it by eye.

Font choice and size

Ornate or complex fonts degrade legibility on small screens. Choose a clear, simple typeface designed for screen use. Establish a minimum font size in your design system that remains readable on the smallest mobile displays without requiring the user to zoom in.

Information hierarchy

A social media graphic is scanned, not read. You have seconds to convey a message. Use size, weight and placement to create a clear visual hierarchy that guides the user's eye to the most important information first. This reduces cognitive load and increases the chance your message will be understood at a glance.

Integrating a call-to-action

A call-to-action (CTA) should be an integral part of the design, not an element dropped in at the end. Its placement should feel natural, often following the Z-pattern of reading in the lower-right corner. The design of the CTA itself—using a contrasting colour for a button shape or a simple text instruction with an arrow—must signal its purpose clearly without overwhelming the graphic's primary message.

“Design is the silent ambassador of your brand. It speaks volumes about your values, your message, and your identity before you even say a word. A well-designed graphic can capture the essence of your brand in a single glance and leave a lasting impression.” – Paul Rand

Conclusion

Effective social graphics are a product of process not just creativity. By implementing a design system, adhering to technical specifications for delivery and prioritising accessibility, you create a scalable and predictable production line. This approach ensures every graphic reinforces your brand and communicates clearly, turning your social feed into a consistent and professional brand asset.
